Idaho State Police Investigating A Shooting Involving Adams County Sheriff's Deputies

On Sunday, November 1, 2015, at approximately 6:45 p.m. Adams County Sheriff's Office received a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a passenger car and a cow bull on US95 at milepost 142, north of Council.

Emergency medical personnel and Adams County deputies arrived to the scene and began to extricate the driver and a passenger from a Subaru station wagon. During this time the bull that was injured in the crash began charging at first responders and other vehicles.

As deputies prepared to put the injured bull down, the owner of the bull, Jack Yantis, 62 of Council, arrived on scene with a rifle. The events that transpired over the course of the next few minutes are under investigation but, at this time, it is believed that two deputies and Mr. Yantis all fired their weapons. Mr. Yantis sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. One deputy sustained a minor injury.

"Our thoughts are with our community and especially all those involved in this incident," said Adams County Sheriff Ryan Zollman. "The Adams County Sheriff's Office takes matters involving any use of force very seriously and we have requested detectives with the Idaho State Police to conduct the investigation into this incident."

The deputies who were involved are on paid administrative leave per agency policy. Their names are not being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

The two people who were involved in the motor vehicle crash were transported by air ambulance to a Boise hospital. The conditions of these two people are unknown at this time.

US95 was blocked from 6:45 pm until 3:05 am. Passenger vehicles were rerouted along county roads and commercial vehicles were stopped until the highway opened.

The investigation is ongoing and no other information is expected to be released today.
