Dyed Fuel Inspection
Per Idaho Code (IC) 49-676, the Idaho State Police (ISP) and Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), in partnership with the Idaho State Tax Commission, will perform a visual inspection and photograph samples of fuel from the main supply tank of qualifying vehicles for the presence of dye. SafetyNet: Enhancing Commercial Vehicle Safety Nationwide
SafetyNet is a comprehensive federal software program with a global impact, consisting of several modules designed to enhance commercial vehicle safety. Nationally and internationally utilized, SafetyNet’s Inspection module houses detailed commercial driver and vehicle inspection data, while the Crash module condenses commercial vehicle crash data into a digestible format. Additionally, the Compliance Review module contains critical commercial safety audit information.
In this sophisticated system, each state uploads its data to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s main computer (MCMIS), facilitating access to national, state, and commercial carrier-level information. The technology is continually evolving, with states making strides to provide “real-time” data, aiding in the ongoing efforts to improve truck safety and reduce crashes.
Administered by the Commercial Vehicle Safety section, SafetyNet plays a pivotal role in Idaho’s commitment to safety. Sixteen ISP troopers, trained in the CVSA-approved North American Standard for commercial vehicle inspections, utilize written forms or laptops with the federal-based ASPEN program. The gathered information is seamlessly transmitted or entered into the SafetyNet system. Meanwhile, crash information is compiled by officers at various levels—state, county, and city—before being sent to the Idaho Transportation Department and integrated into their system. An extract of the commercial crash data is subsequently retrieved and transferred into the SafetyNet Crash module, and all information is uploaded to MCMIS.
For interstate carriers seeking a comprehensive overview of their safety record, the SAFER website offers access to a carrier profile—an amalgamation of all inspections, crashes, and audits conducted on their company.
Recognizing the importance of staying ahead of the curve, CVS collaborates with state and federal agencies to leverage new technology. For instance, the 2001 upgrade to the SafetyNet system empowered commercial vehicle inspectors with real-time inspection information as carriers traverse the state, showcasing a commitment to accuracy and timeliness in promoting commercial vehicle safety.
