CENTRAL IDAHO – With roads reopening in the Gwen Fire area after evacuations, the Idaho State Police (ISP) urges all travelers and residents to use extreme caution. The area contains active fires, which are a constant and significant threat and present numerous hazards. Based on shifting weather patterns, fire conditions may change rapidly, and road openings are continuously re-evaluated for safety purposes.

ISP troopers are aggressively working to slow traffic in the affected area. The Idaho Transportation Department recommends a speed limit of 45 mph, but drivers continue to travel too fast for the conditions.

Important Safety Warnings:

  • Active Fire Operations: Firefighters and emergency vehicles continue actively working; give them plenty of space and follow all instructions. Your cooperation is vital for the safety of everyone involved.
  • Roadway Obstructions: Loose and dangerous debris may be on roadways. Be aware of fallen trees and other obstructions that may block or narrow roads.
  • Visibility: Smoke can significantly reduce visibility, making driving conditions hazardous.
  • Wildlife: Displaced wildlife may be present on or near roadways, increasing the risk of collisions.
  • Electrical Hazards: Downed and potentially energized electrical lines pose significant risks.
  • Gas Leaks: Propane or natural gas lines may have been compromised and could be leaking.

Crews are continuously assessing the roadway and fire damage. Conditions can change rapidly, and safe areas may quickly become hazardous again.

Your safety is our top priority. It is important to remain cautious and alert as roads reopen, and we work together to navigate these challenging conditions. Stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and support one another during this difficult time.
