Idaho State Police Celebrates National Forensic Science Week, Highlighting Advances and Contributions in Forensic Science

MERIDIAN, Idaho – The Idaho State Police (ISP) invites media to participate in the 7th Annual National Forensic Science Week (NFSW), September 15 – 21, 2024. This event highlights the critical role of forensic science in the criminal justice system and showcases the advancements and contributions made by ISP’s Forensic Services.

Media Opportunities:

• Interviews: ISP Lab Systems Director Matthew Gamette and other forensic experts are available for interviews during the week of the event and the week before to prep for stories during NFSW. These experts can provide in-depth insights into the impact of forensic science on law enforcement, discuss recent technological advancements, and share how these innovations help solve crimes and ensure justice.
• Event Coverage: On Tuesday, September 17, at 7 p.m., ISP will host a community education presentation at Boise State University. The event will feature Canyon County Prosecutor Theodore Lagerwall, who will present a case study on the Daralyn Johnson investigation. The presentation will be streamed online and include the announcement of awards recognizing excellence in forensic science.
• Virtual Lab Tour: The media is encouraged to explore ISP’s laboratories through a virtual tour, which provides insights into the meticulous processes of evidence handling, testing, and analysis. The tour can be viewed on YouTube at https://bit.ly/3eVzQif.

• Trafficking and Crime Laboratories: Learn about ISP’s role in analyzing and identifying illegal substances, including fentanyl, and supporting initiatives like Project Safe Harbor.

• Technological Advancements: Explore ISP’s efforts to enhance forensic capabilities, including implementing the Randox ToxScreen Instrument.
• Honoring Excellence: Coverage of the Rick Groff Visionary Leadership in Forensic Science Award, Forensic Science Teacher of the Year Award, and recognition of ISP lab staff.
