Idaho State Police and Local Law Enforcement Prioritize Safety During Thanksgiving Travel
MERIDIAN, Idaho – As Thanksgiving approaches, a united front of law enforcement agencies across Idaho are committed to ensuring the safety of all travelers during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. The Idaho State Police (ISP) is partnering with local agencies statewide to conduct high-visibility patrols enforcing impaired driving, aggressive driving, and other traffic violations.
Throughout the Holiday Season, travel volumes are expected to increase from last year, with the potential for adverse winter weather further complicating road conditions. In the Magic Valley, ISP will collaborate with the Minidoka, Cassia, Gooding, and Jerome County Sheriff’s Offices to conduct high-visibility traffic stops. Efforts will focus on reducing injury and fatality crashes during the pre-holiday travel period, targeting impaired drivers, and supporting DUI enforcement. These initiatives also bolster criminal interdiction efforts, aiming to disrupt the flow of dangerous drugs and other crimes during the holiday weekend.
“With increased traffic volumes comes an increased need for vigilance behind the wheel,” said Lieutenant Colonel Fritz Zweigart. “We urge everyone to slow down, buckle up, and never drive under the influence. Together, we can prevent needless tragedies and make this holiday season safer.”
The importance of this effort is apparent from the Idaho Transportation Department data. In 2023, there were over 300 crashes statewide during the Thanksgiving Holiday. Many of these collisions resulted in severe injuries or fatalities.
“Every driver has a role to play in road safety,” said Lt. Col. Zweigart. “By driving sober, following the speed limit, and staying alert, we can reduce crashes and save lives.”
Safety Tips for Holiday Travel:
- Drive sober: Plan for a sober ride when alcohol is involved.
- Buckle up: Seatbelts save lives and are your best defense in a crash.
- Avoid distractions: Focus on the road and put away your phone.
- Prepare for weather: Check forecasts, allow extra travel time, and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
Help make the holiday season a time of joy and togetherness by committing to safe and responsible driving. Law enforcement stands ready to protect our roads, but your choices behind the wheel make the biggest difference. Together, let’s protect lives and prevent tragedies.
