Minor Injury Crash Involving School Bus, SH54 at Clagstone, Near Athol.
ATHOL, Idaho – Idaho State Police and Kootenai County Sheriffs are investigating a two-vehicle injury crash which occurred December 6, 2024, at approximately 3:40 PM at the intersection of State Highway 54 and Clagstone Rd, Kootenai County, Idaho.
Preliminary investigation shows a 2005 International School Bus driven by a 38-year-old female from Spirit Lake, Idaho was traveling southbound on Clagstone Rd, failed to yield to through traffic on State Highway 54 from a stop sign, and collided with a 2003 Honda Civic driven by a 47-year-old male from Spirit Lake, Idaho which was traveling eastbound on State Highway 54. After the collision, both vehicles came to a final rest on the southside of State Highway 54 and the International bus impacted a Kootenai Electric power pole which then became supported by the bus.
The International Bus belonging to Lakeland Joint School District 272, was occupied by 31 students from Athol Elementary School. One student was reported to have a cut lip and no other injuries were reported for any of the bus’s occupants. The bus’s occupants were checked for injuries by Kootenai County EMS at the scene, loaded onto another school bus, and transported to Real Life Ministries where they were released to parents.
The driver and sole occupant of the Honda was not wearing their seatbelt and was transported by ground ambulance to Kootenai Health for injuries.
Traffic on Clagstone Rd was blocked for approximately 2.5 hours to allow emergency responders to assist those involved.
This incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
