Idaho recognizes National Missing Children’s Day

MERIDIAN, Idaho – Today, the Idaho State Police (ISP) joins agencies across the country in observing National Missing Children’s Day, a day to highlight children who are missing and to renew efforts to bring them home. Established in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, this day is a reminder of the need for public awareness, community involvement, and continued action.
Governor Brad Little issued a proclamation recognizing May 25 as Missing Children’s Day in Idaho, reaffirming the state’s commitment to the safety and well-being of every child.
According to the Idaho Missing Persons Clearinghouse (IMPC), which is operated by ISP, approximately 50 juveniles are currently listed as missing across the state. These cases are part of a broader group of about 180 active missing persons statewide. Behind each name is a son or daughter, a student, or a friend, and each deserves to be found.
“The issue of missing children is deeply personal,” Colonel Bill Gardiner said. “Behind every case is a family searching for answers. As a broader community, we won’t stop looking, and we won’t stop caring.”
The IMPC plays a key role in Idaho’s response to missing persons cases. The Clearinghouse:
- Operates a 24-hour toll-free hotline for reporting and assistance
- Supports law enforcement with data tracking and case analysis
- Coordinates with state and national partners, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children
- Provides training and resources for investigators and first responders
The IMPC reminds the public that there’s no waiting period to report someone missing in Idaho. Whether it’s a runaway, a suspected abduction, or a vulnerable person with medical or developmental needs, timely reporting is critical.
Call 911 or contact your local law enforcement agency to report a missing person. Anyone with information about a missing child or adult is urged to contact law enforcement immediately.
