Suspect arrested after firing at law enforcement and civilians during multi-state incident

LEWISTON, Idaho – On August 6, 2025, just after 4 p.m., the Idaho State Police (ISP) received a 911 call reporting a white 2020 GMC Sierra pickup driving erratically southbound on U.S. Highway 95, also known as the Lewiston Hill.

The caller reported seeing the driver waving a handgun through the vehicle’s sunroof and believed they heard gunfire coming from the pickup while it was still in Washington. The driver allegedly fired at the caller’s vehicle near the base of Lewiston Hill, around milepost 313.

An ISP trooper located the Sierra in Lewiston and conducted a high-risk (felony) traffic stop. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.

During the investigation, ISP troopers learned the incident began earlier in Whitman County, Washington, where the driver, identified as a 58-year-old man from Sequim, Washington, allegedly fired a shot from his vehicle. Later, the driver reportedly shot toward a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper as the Sierra drove to Idaho. The driver told ISP troopers he intentionally fired his gun.

The suspect was arrested by ISP troopers and booked into the Nez Perce County Jail on probable cause for aggravated assault. Additional charges may be filed by WSP and the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, pending the outcome of their investigations.

No injuries were reported to be associated with this incident.

The shootings remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact ISP District 2 at (208) 750-9300 with details on what occurred in Idaho.

The Sierra pickup had a large decal on the side reading “hammer and nail.”

During the arrest and investigation, US-12 was temporarily closed at 3rd Avenue North in Lewiston. The roadway has since reopened.
