Idaho State Police arrest motorcyclist for Reckless Driving and remind riders to slow down

CANYON COUNTY, Idaho — Idaho State Police (ISP) cited a motorcyclist for reckless driving after a high-speed incident on Interstate 84, underscoring ongoing concerns about unsafe motorcycle operation as spring traffic increases on Idaho roads.

On March 23, 2026, shortly before 4 p.m., an ISP Motors trooper observed a brown 2018 BMW R1200 motorcycle traveling eastbound on I-84 at high speed in heavy traffic near milepost 29. The rider weaved between slower-moving vehicles and changed lanes without signaling. Lidar confirmed the motorcycle was travelling 115 miles per hour, prompting a traffic stop. The 27-year-old rider admitted to speeding. He was arrested and booked for reckless driving, while the motorcycle was impounded.

This incident shows a broader seasonal trend of increased aggressive and unsafe motorcycle riding in traffic.

“Every year, as the weather improves, we see more motorcycles on the road, and unfortunately, we also see an increase in high-risk riding,” District 3 Captain Mike Winans said. “Excessive speed, lane splitting, and aggressive riding in heavy traffic put everyone at risk, including the rider. Motorcycles offer less protection in a crash, and at those speeds, there is little margin for error. Riders need to make responsible decisions and understand that safety on our roadways depends on everyone.”

ISP reminds all motorists to remain alert and share the road responsibly. Riders must obey speed limits, use proper signaling, and ride in a manner consistent with traffic conditions. Drivers should stay alert and watch for motorcycles, especially during peak travel times.

This incident remains under investigation by ISP.
