CASSIA COUNTY, Idaho – The Idaho State Police (ISP) is investigating a fatal incident that occurred Sunday evening, June 23, 2025, following a law enforcement pursuit initiated after reports of a suspect discharging firearms in a remote campground area.
At the request of the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), ISP troopers responded to assist deputies with reports of multiple shots fired near the Sublett Campground. Troopers coordinated with deputies to locate and approach the suspect. However, the suspect’s 2005 Volvo XC90 was observed parked on the side of the road, and it sped away as a deputy arrived.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop. The suspect initially complied, but when the deputy approached the vehicle, the suspect fled again in his vehicle. Troopers pursued the Volvo but lost visual contact due to high speeds and dusty conditions. Minutes later, troopers found the car had crashed and rolled.
The driver was located nearby, and troopers immediately initiated life-saving measures and continued efforts until medics arrived. Unfortunately, the suspect died at the scene.
A loaded rifle and a shotgun were recovered from the Volvo. Additional ammunition was located, but no corresponding firearm was found.
The Cassia County Coroner’s Office responded and took custody of the deceased. The coroner will release the individual’s identity and determine the cause and manner of death following further investigation.
ISP is overseeing the agency’s assistance and investigation into the pursuit. CCSO secured and impounded the firearms. The Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal crash.
This incident remains under active investigation. No further information is available at this time.
