Critical Incident Task Force Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting Near Heyburn

HEYBURN, Idaho – The Jerome County Sheriff’s Office is leading the Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) investigation into an officer-involved shooting involving an Idaho State Police (ISP) trooper near Heyburn.
At approximately 4:53 p.m. on August 17, 2026, a trooper initiated a traffic stop involving a 2000 Chevy Silverado in the 700 block of W. 400 S. in Minidoka County. During the traffic stop, the trooper requested additional law enforcement units to respond. Shortly thereafter, the trooper reported gunfire.
The 31-year-old male driver was struck. The trooper and responding personnel attempted emergency medical aid. The driver succumbed to his injuries.
The trooper was not injured. He has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard ISP procedure pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Minidoka County Coroner’s Office will take custody of the deceased and determine the cause and manner of death, as well as release the individual’s identity after notifying the family.
The Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) is a team of investigators and professional staff from local law enforcement agencies who provide investigative and other assistance to law enforcement agencies in police use of force and other critical incidents. The CITF works with the local Prosecutor’s Office, which reviews completed investigations.
The Jerome County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigating agency for this incident and handling media inquiries. Additional information will be released as the investigation allows.
