Explosive detection K-9 Kimber retires following cancer diagnosis
BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho State Police is saddened to announce the retirement of explosive detection K-9 Kimber following a recent cancer diagnosis. Kimber has served at the Idaho State Capitol as part of the Capitol Protective Services team since 2022.
In February, Kimber underwent surgery to remove a cyst. Testing confirmed an aggressive form of cancer, and she has been given only weeks to live.
“Kimber is only five years old,” K-9 handler Jayce Miller said. “You never expect to be saying goodbye this soon. The minute she went to work, she was completely locked in. She loved doing her job and meeting people. For now, I’m just focused on giving her all the extra treats and love she deserves.”
Since joining the explosive detection K-9 program in 2022, Kimber has supported security operations at the Idaho State Capitol during legislative sessions, protests and public events, as well as at state facilities throughout the Boise area.
Kimber’s handler, Trooper Jayce Miller, is closely monitoring her condition and will make decisions in Kimber’s best interest.
