On March 10, 2020 a fatal crash occurred on SH53 at milepost 0.8, west of Rathdrum, Idaho approximately 7 miles. A blue 1998 Subaru Legacy driven by Gage Frizzell, 21, of Coeur d'Alene, ID was travelling westbound when he drifted into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a brown 2017 Ford F150 pickup driven by Patrick D. Creekmore, 45, of Rathdrum, Idaho. Frizzell was pronounced deceased at the scene. Creekmore was transported to Kootenai Health by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. The highway was blocked for approximately 2.5 hours. Next of kin has been notified.
