Fatality crash near St. Maries

ST MARIES, IDAHO – Idaho State Police is investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. on May 22, 2026, in Benewah County Idaho. The crash occurred near the 9000 block of Railroad Grade Rd, Saint Maries, ID.

A 52-year-old male from Potlatch, ID and a 51-year-old female passenger from Potlatch, ID, were driving a 2023 Can-Am Maverick Sport when the vehicle went off the roadway, down an embankment, and into the river. Neither occupant was wearing their seat belts and were pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified.

The roadway was blocked for approximately 4.5 hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police. Assisting agencies: Benewah County Sheriff’s Office and Benewah County EMS.
