MERIDIAN – The Idaho State Police are thankful for all the drivers traveling on Idaho’s highways that have good driving habits, but want to remind others of those habits so that everybody makes it to their holiday destinations safely this week.

“The vast majority of those behind the wheel do drive safely and troopers are thankful for those drivers,” says Lt. Brad Doty, “however, Thanksgiving week is the busiest time of the year for travel and we want to encourage all drivers to be extra safe.”

Troopers remind drivers to:

  • Designate a driver, take a taxi but whatever you do, don’t drink and drive
  • Wear your seatbelt, it can save your life
  • Drive according to conditions even if it is below the posted speed limit
  • Be patient with other drivers and give yourself extra time to travel
  • Stay alert and get enough sleep before traveling
  • Avoid distractions including your cell phones
  • Move over when passing emergency vehicles

Troopers will be focusing on traffic violations that are known to be factors in crashes and cause fatalities. Impaired driving, speed, aggressive and distracted driving often top that list. Additionally, those not wearing their seatbelt or child car seats can expect to be cited.

Lastly, ISP reminds all motorists to report impaired drivers. Use the Idaho State Police REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) hotline at *ISP (*477) or dial 9-1-1.
