CORRECTION: Joshua M. Kirkman is 29 years old.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Idaho – The Idaho State Police (ISP) arrested Joshua M. Kirkman, 35, on murder charges stemming from the 2022 shooting deaths of Eric Ortega and Megan Amaya at their residence on Ada Road in New Plymouth.

Kirkman was taken into custody following a lengthy investigation into the May 14, 2022, homicides.  The evidence indicates the victim and suspect knew each other. Following the crime, Kirkman allegedly fled from Malheur County deputies and discarded a pistol into a canal. That firearm was recovered and confirmed as a forensic match to the weapon used in the killings. Kirkman denied knowing the victims, despite multiple witnesses and surveillance video showing numerous visits to the home.

“These families have waited a long time for accountability in this case,” District 3 Captain Mike Winans said. “This investigation required steady and detailed work that included tracking down evidence, reviewing video, and interviewing people with information about this case. The detectives and our local partners followed the facts where they led, and that’s the kind of work that leads to holding violent criminals accountable.”

Based on additional witness information, investigators know other suspects were involved in these murders, with charges possible. Investigators continue coordinating with county prosecutors and partner agencies in this ongoing murder investigation.

The Payette County Sheriff’s Office, Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and prosecutors in both Idaho and Oregon assisted with the investigation.

All involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
