Idaho State Police Investigates Officer-Involved Use of Force in Benewah County
EMIDA, Idaho – The Idaho State Police (ISP) is investigating a use of force shooting incident that occurred at a residence in Emida when Benewah County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to arrest a male individual.
On Monday, June 24, Benewah County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were at a residence in the 60 block of S. Station Road in Emida. Deputies attempted to locate and arrest a 33-year-old male for a felony probation violation warrant. After contacting a female resident, the deputies entered the home. As deputies approached a bedroom, a shot was fired from within the room. A deputy near the bedroom believed he was being shot at and fired one round.
Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed the male died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was not struck by the deputy’s bullet.
As gunfire is considered a use of force by law enforcement, the Benewah County Sheriff’s Office requested ISP conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The Benewah County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the deceased and will release his identity, as well as determine the official cause and manner of his death.
