Idaho State Police to Commission 16 Troopers on Friday During Ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda
MERIDIAN – The Idaho State Police will commission sixteen new troopers during a ceremony in the State Capitol Rotunda in Boise on Friday, March 6th at 10:30 a.m. During the ceremony the Advanced Training Class (ATC) of new troopers will take the oath of office and receive their campaign hat and badge. The class will be addressed by Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter, Colonel Ralph Powell, Director of the Idaho State Police and Class President Christian Briggs. In a longstanding tradition of ISP, the class will showcase their patrol cars on the Statehouse steps beginning at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to the ceremony and to take a step back into history with ISP's parade cars that will also be on display.
The Idaho State Police ATC is a 16-week program that all recruits must complete to become a state trooper, including those who were previously employed by another law enforcement agency and are already certified peace officers. Twelve of the troopers graduating will go on to complete the 10-week Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Basic Patrol Academy. The four troopers already certified will be assigned to one of six districts of ISP throughout the state to complete a field training program that lasts approximately 12 weeks. During this stage the new troopers will work with a series of experienced troopers who will teach, evaluate and document each of them in an on-the-job setting.

During ATC, recruits are trained to assume responsibilities of an Idaho State Trooper which include, but are not limited to:
– Traffic control and enforcement
– Motor vehicle crash investigations
– Criminal investigations
– Report writing
– Impaired driving investigations
– Crime scene processing and investigation
– Law and courtroom procedure
– Firearms and defensive weapons
– Communication techniques including public speaking
– Ethics

There will be an opportunity for photographs with the new troopers with their patrol vehicles in front of the Capitol after the ceremony on Friday. Any on-camera interviews will have to be completed before the ceremony.
