Idaho State Police Trooper Named Finalist for Prestigious International Award

MERIDIAN, Idaho – The Idaho State Police (ISP) proudly announces that Corporal Travis Gurney has been selected as a finalist for the 2024 IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year Award. This prestigious recognition, presented by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and Motorola Solutions, is among the highest honors in law enforcement. It is awarded to state troopers and provincial police officers who exemplify bravery, leadership, and professionalism in the line of duty.

Corporal Gurney, representing the Mountain Pacific Region, was nominated for his courageous actions on January 4, 2024, when he risked his life to prevent a catastrophic wrong-way collision on Interstate 86. During a high-speed pursuit involving an impaired driver going against traffic, Corporal Gurney put his life on the line by strategically hitting the suspect head-on with his patrol vehicle to stop the suspect, absorbing the impact and ultimately preventing what could have been a multiple-fatality crash. Despite sustaining damage to his vehicle, he exited and assisted in the suspect’s apprehension.

“Corporal Gurney’s selfless actions and extraordinary dedication to protecting the public embody the highest ideals of the Idaho State Police and the law enforcement profession,” said Colonel Bill Gardiner, ISP Director. “Troopers put their lives on the line every day, and this nomination is a testament to their sacrifice and service. Corporal Gurney went above and beyond, demonstrating the courage, professionalism, and quick thinking to save lives that day.”

Beyond his heroic actions in the field, Corporal Gurney has become an advocate for officer mental health and wellness, working to enhance ISP’s Peer Support Program and implement procedural changes to improve care for injured troopers. His dedication to fellow officers and the community underscores his leadership and commitment to service.

The IACP will honor Corporal Gurney and three other regional finalists at the annual IACP Division Midyear Meeting, where the 2024 IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year will be announced.

The Idaho State Police extends its gratitude to the IACP and Motorola Solutions for recognizing the sacrifices made by troopers across the country. We are incredibly proud of Corporal Gurney’s bravery and dedication to public safety.
