ISP increasing patrols through Memorial Day weekend on SH-55

McCALL, Idaho — As Idahoans hit the road for the long Memorial Day weekend, the Idaho State Police is partnering with local law enforcement agencies for a high-visibility traffic emphasis along State Highway 55 beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend.

The enforcement effort will span from the Avimor region to New Meadows and focus on reducing dangerous driving behaviors along one of Idaho’s busiest summer travel corridors. Troopers regularly encounter speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and unsafe passing along the corridor — behaviors that significantly increase the risk of serious crashes.

“Summer traffic on SH-55 starts to increase dramatically this time of year,” McCall Resident Trooper Chase McPherson said. “We know people are eager to get to the mountains, but slowing down, staying patient, and driving responsibly can save lives.”

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer because fatal crashes involving teen drivers significantly increase nationwide. Drivers traveling the popular north-south route are encouraged to:

  • Watch for motorcycles: Look twice. Riders are harder to see and more vulnerable.
  • Give space to RVs and trailers: Larger vehicles need more time and room to stop and turn.
  • Use caution in work zones: Several work zones are active along SH-55. Follow posted signs, slow down, and plan ahead for delays.
  • Keep your cool: Heat and heavy traffic can create tension. Don’t let frustration escalate into road rage.
  • Travel during off-peak hours when possible to avoid heavy congestion.

ISP also encourages motorists to plan ahead when traveling through areas with limited cell service, including portions of SH-55. Drivers should let others know their travel plans and be prepared for emergencies before heading into remote areas.
