MEDIA ADVISORY: New Idaho State Police Director to be Sworn in During Change of Command Ceremony
MERIDIAN, Idaho—The Idaho State Police (ISP) will hold a change of command ceremony on August 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the ISP Meridian Headquarters, located at 700 S. Stratford Dr. This ceremony will mark the transfer of leadership from Colonel Kedrick Wills, the outgoing Director, to Colonel Bill Gardiner, the incoming Director.
Colonel Wills, a dedicated leader throughout his 29 years with ISP, began his career in January 1996 as a resident trooper in southeastern Idaho, following service as a city law enforcement officer. His journey saw him hold various assignments and ranks across the state, culminating in his appointment as Director in July 2017 by Governor Butch Otter and reappointment by Governor Brad Little in January 2020. Significant achievements and a steadfast commitment to the people of Idaho have marked his tenure.
“It has been an honor to serve alongside the dedicated men and women who selflessly protect the people of Idaho,” said Colonel Wills. “As I retire, I am proud of the life-changing and lifesaving work we have done, and I’m confident that ISP will continue to serve all Idahoans with excellence. Idaho is a better state because of the extraordinary individuals who serve our state.”
Colonel Gardiner, a native Idahoan, steps into the Director position from his role as Deputy Director and Chief of Staff. With 25 years of service, Colonel Gardiner began as a trooper in Idaho Falls and has held key positions in the Commercial Vehicle Safety, Executive Protection Unit, and District 3 Commander. As a Major, he managed Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, and Twin Falls operations. Colonel Gardiner’s advanced degrees from Idaho State University and the University of Oklahoma complement his extensive experience and his graduation from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy (Class #238).
Colonel Gardiner, expressing his gratitude for Governor Little’s confidence, stated, “I am honored to step into the role of Director of the Idaho State Police, an agency with a proud tradition of excellence and service to the community. I look forward to continuing our mission of protecting and serving the people of Idaho with integrity and professionalism, focusing on Governor Little’s Esto Perpetua. This includes addressing critical issues such as human trafficking, combating fentanyl, and enhancing public safety. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Colonel Wills for his outstanding leadership and dedicated service. His contributions have significantly shaped ISP into the respected organization it is today, and I am committed to continuing his legacy of service.”
The ceremony, a significant event in the history of ISP, will be presided over by Governor Little. His presence underscores the importance of this transition and the state’s continued commitment to public safety. The passing of the colors and other traditional elements will mark the official transfer of leadership.
With over 700 employees, ISP remains committed to serving and protecting Idaho’s citizens. The agency upholds public safety by enforcing traffic and criminal laws, assisting local agencies, and conducting thorough investigations. Through innovative policing strategies, community partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to integrity and professionalism, ISP strives to foster trust, ensure justice, and enhance the quality of life for all residents and visitors in Idaho.
