Single Vehicle Fatality Crash on State Highway 1, near Porthill

The Idaho State Police is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred at approximately 4 am on September 27, 2026, in Boundary County, Idaho.

The crash occurred on State Highway 1 near mile marker 5, just south of Porthill. A 1978 Chevrolet pickup traveling southbound left the west side of the roadway and descended a steep embankment, striking several trees. The vehicle ultimately came to rest in a near-vertical, nose-down position against a large tree.
The pickup was occupied by a 20-year-old male driver and a 21-year-old male passenger, both from Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt. The passenger was transported by air ambulance to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
