Skylar Mead Transported to Nez Perce County to Face Murder Charges
DISTRIBUTION ON BEHALF OF: Nez Perce County Prosecutor’s Office
Skylar Meade was transported to Nez Perce County today to answer for the murder of James L. Mauney. In a coordinated effort, multiple law enforcement agencies successfully managed the secure transportation of Skylar Meade from Ada County where he had been held and sentenced for his participation in escaping from the custody of the Idaho Department of Corrections. This operation, facilitated by the Idaho State Police (ISP) with the help of the Lewiston Police Department, Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office and the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, was comprehensively planned to prioritize safety and ensure the successful transport of the defendant.
Skylar Meade, classified as a high-risk, high-threat prisoner, had already pleaded guilty to planning and executing a prison break on March 20, 2024. During his escape, he is alleged to have murdered 83-year-old James L. Mauney of Juliaetta, ID, and a second individual in Clearwater County. On June 11, 2024, he was formally indicted in Nez Perce County for the murder of James Mauney near Leland, Idaho.
Major Matthew Smith, of ISP Northern Command, emphasized the commitment to maintaining the integrity of the legal process: “Our primary objective was to ensure a safe and secure transport of the detainee. We are dedicated to upholding the highest standards and providing confidence to all involved. Extensive planning and coordination facilitated this high-security operation.”
Nez Perce County Prosecutor Justin Coleman expressed appreciation for efforts in getting Meade to Lewiston. “I want to thank all of the agencies involved; ISP, Ada and Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Offices, and the Lewiston Police Department. Each worked hard and contributed significant amounts of time and man power to guarantee there were no issues today. Now we can continue our work to hold him accountable for his crimes in our County,” Coleman said.
